SOMATICS
-
Stress often shows up in the body as tension, muscle pain, headaches, upset stomach, and an inability to feel relaxed. With somatic practices, the body can learn to let go of tightly held muscles, learn to move into more relaxed postures, soften ridigity and slow down the fast pace stress often demands.
-
Anxiety presents as fear and activation in the body. With somatic work, we can teach our nervous system to calm down and experience a felt sense of safety. Anxiety and fear are automatic responses when the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) turns on and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) shuts down. With practice we can quiet the SNS and learn to stimulate the PNS. Somatic work can greatly alleviate the intensity of anxiety and panic.
-
Trauma is held in the body, and often shows up as long held aches and pains as well as chronic illness. By incorporating the body in the healing of trauma, somatic therapies can help release the deeply held physical memories of emotional trauma.
-
We live in a pretty "heady" culture, meaning that we often pay most attention to our mind, our thoughts, and whatever it is that keeps us in our thinking/daydreaming preoccupied part of the self. This can leave us very disconnected from our body, which limits the amount of information and wisdom we have available to us. Through somatic practices we can learn to be aware of interoception (sensations within the body), exteroception (where our body is in space), and proprioception (how our body moves through space). With increased embodiment, we can pick up on physical distress more quickly and also help ourselves experience peace, calm and safety.
